PRESS RELEASE

Date: 24 February 2011

Superior Group Awarded Chok-A-Blok Distribution Rights

The Superior Group® has been appointed as the Australian and New Zealand distributor for the Chok-a-Blok tie down strap protector product.

Superior’s Managing Director investigated the product at the METS Trade Show in Amsterdam and saw its potential for use in Superior’s own transport operations and obviously for many other industries and organisations.

Chok-a-Blok is an ingenious solution to a very common problem – strapping your boat, car, bike, furniture or other object to a trailer - only to discover at your destination that the item has been damaged or marked where the straps rub.  It protects both the load and the webbing, ensuring that expensive items are not marked or damaged during transportation.

Chok-a-Blok is a polypropylene wear sleeve with a closed cell cross-linked polyethylene foam backing attached. It is highly pure, will not cause corrosion or silver staining, is lightweight, tough, flexible, C.F.C. & H.C.F.C. free, chemically inert, non toxic and resistant to moisture, oils, solvents, dilute acids and UV light. Key features include -

  • can be clipped onto the webbing strap using one hand.
  • light weight and stays in place on the strap throughout the important stage of strap positioning.
  • can be slid easily along the strap to the points of contact.
  • additional units can be added to extend the area of coverage.
  • as tension is applied to the strap, frictional damage to the surface of the cargo is eliminated because the strap is allowed to slip easily across the polypropylene top surface.

The Scholarship presentation was held at Sydney Wharf Marina on a very wet Sydney day. L – R: J. Hogan (Superior Marinas), N. Johnston (Sydney Wharf Marina)

Superior Marinas and Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) are pleased to announce that the winner of the Superior Marinas Scholarship is Nairn Johnston of Sydney Wharf Marina.  Each year MIAA’s platinum and gold sponsors offer scholarships as an incentive for students to further their education and advance their career in the marina industry.

This year, MIAA gold sponsor Superior Marinas offered a scholarship for the Intermediate Marina Management course which is being held in Sydney in June 2010.  Applicants were required to demonstrate commitment and service to the industry and evidence work place leadership.

Nairn commenced his involvement in the marina industry at the age of 14 where he was the marina assistant for a marina in Toronto NSW, serving fuel and helping in the boat yard area. He has also  been a full time crew member working on superyachts in Europe and the USA.  Upon returning to Sydney, he took up the role of assistant marina manager at then named Sydney Superyacht Centre.  In 2005 Nairn became the  manager and development consultant for the new Sydney Wharf Marina, which completely replaced the superyacht centre, and assistant manager for Jones Bay Wharf.  In 2008 he took over as full time marina manager for both facilities.

John Hogan, Managing Director of Superior Marinas presented Nairn with the scholarship along with Colin Bransgrove, MIAA Executive Director, and Cathrine Van Venrooy, MIAA Industry Education Officer.

“Nairn is a professional, intelligent person who has a lot to offer our industry,” said John.  “I have great pleasure in being able to present the scholarship to Nairn and wish him all the best for his future within the industry.”

Nairn’s future plans are to progress within the marina industry and gain further qualifications.  “I would also like to work at strata owned marinas becoming better recognised and represented within the industry and assist in educating the public  about  the positive impact a marina can have within a community,” said Nairn.  He is looking forward to starting the Intermediate Marina Management course later in June and meeting some new people also working in marinas.

Gold Coast based Superior Jetties, an international manufacturer of marine berthing systems, has recently completed Stage 11 of the world class marine precinct project on Eden Island in the Indian Ocean island group, The Seychelles.

The Eden Island project is being developed by Eden Island Development Company and will ultimately incorporate 500 villas, all of which will have a berth. Villa construction and project sales are being staged and berths are installed progressively as villas are completed.

Peter Smith, Marketing Director for Eden Island Development Company comments, “After an international search, Superior Jetties was selected to complete the manufacture of the berths to fit our vision for Eden Island, which is a major development in the Seychelles. The fact that each villa has its own berth provides the development with facilities and convenience that is quite unique.”

Mr Smith went on to say “We selected Superior based on their strong product and the Capri system’s flexible connections that made any adjustments required in a remote location much easier. The project has progressed very well with berths installed on a continuous basis as villas have been completed. The Capri’s subtle colours have blended in well with our vision for this beautiful site.”

John Hogan, Superior’s Managing Director visited The Seychelles recently and stated that “It was such a pleasure to see the completed villas and the vision taking place just as the architects had predicted. It really is a beautiful and restful place.”

“This project has been an important part of Superior Jetties’ international expansion as it has shown that our logistics and systems work well even when installed in a distant location.”

Eden Island is an integrated resort development, situated just off the coast of Mahé. Over 40 hectares in size and with more than 16 hectares of private waterways, this man-made paradise will be developed into one of the most exciting residential marina developments in the world.

Working closely with the Seychelles government, the developers have led a team of world renowned architects, urban designers, interior designers and engineers who have planned, researched and created a project that is in complete harmony with the unspoilt beauty and serenity of the Seychelles. Eden Island has caught the imagination of investors, holidaymakers, professional yachtsmen and wide-eyed dreamers the world over.

Eden Island’s high-calibre commercial marina will be providing berthing facilities for all types of vessels, but specialise particularly in accommodating super-yachts up to 100m in length. Each of the over 470 apartments, spacious maisons and private villas will have access to their own mooring, so that every owner can have a boat or yacht anchored in paradise.
